February Is The New January
January 1st has always been the designated day for fresh starts, resolutions, and kicking off new habits.
But let’s be honest—January isn’t giving “fresh start” energy anymore.
These days, January feels like a month-long hangover. Everyone is crawling out of burnout from Q4, inboxes are overflowing with “let’s circle back in the new year” emails, and on top of it all, cold and flu season is doing its best to take us all out. Not to mention, this year is already feeling heavier than usual, for obvious reasons. January is exhausting.
Which is why we’re making an official decree: February is the new January.
Let’s stop pretending that January is the best time to launch into new goals. December is too chaotic for real reflection, and by the time January rolls around, most of us are still catching our breath. Instead of forcing productivity, what if we used January to evaluate the past year and strategically plan for the next?
And then, in February? That’s when we actually get moving.
Therapists: Here’s How to Set Smarter Goals in February
Instead of setting vague New Year’s resolutions (that you’ll abandon by March), let’s focus on tangible goals that will actually make your practice run smoother and increase profits.
1. Financial Goals: More Profit, Less Chaos
Audit your expenses – Where is your money actually going? Are you paying for software you barely use? Is payroll bloated? Are you leaking cash without realizing it?
Adjust your pricing – If you haven’t reviewed your rates in over a year, it’s time. Inflation is real, and your expertise deserves to be compensated accordingly.
Streamline invoicing & collections – Are you wasting hours chasing down payments? Automate what you can and clean up your billing process.
2. Delegation Goals: Stop Doing Everything Yourself
What’s on your plate that shouldn’t be? – If you’re still handling intake calls, rescheduling clients, or responding to every email personally, that’s a problem.
Clarify team roles – Does everyone on your team know exactly what they’re responsible for, or are things falling through the cracks because “everyone” is supposed to handle them?
Systemize delegation – It’s not just about passing things off; it’s about creating repeatable processes so you’re not constantly answering the same questions.
3. Operational Goals: Fix the “Leaky Roof”
Audit your workflows – Where are things getting stuck? What’s creating unnecessary headaches for you or your team?
Optimize your systems – Your EHR, scheduling software, and internal tools should be making your life easier, not harder. If they’re not, it’s time to reassess.
Create SOPs – If your practice can’t function without you answering 12 questions a day, that’s a sign you need standard operating procedures (SOPs). A clear process = fewer fires to put out.
4. Leadership Goals: Step Into the CEO Role
Set clearer boundaries – Are you running your business, or is your business running you? If you’re overworked and overwhelmed, something has to change.
Develop your leadership skills – You didn’t start your practice to be stuck in the weeds forever. How can you shift into actually leading your team?
Make the hiring/firing decisions you’ve been avoiding – If someone is draining your energy, costing you money, or making life harder for your team, it’s time to make the call.
Your February Action Plan: How to Actually Get Started
So what’s next? Here’s how you can turn February into your real fresh start:
✅ Do a full practice audit – Identify what’s working, what’s not, and where you’re losing money, time, and energy.
✅ Pick 2-3 core goals for Q1 – Instead of trying to do everything at once, prioritize the changes that will have the biggest impact.
✅ Block CEO time on your calendar – If you don’t set aside time to work on your business (not just in it), it’ll never happen.
✅ Get support if you need it – If fixing the back-end of your business isn’t your thing, it might be time to bring in an expert (cough Boss Co cough).
New Year, New Systems
Let’s stop pretending that January is the time to do all the things.
It’s the time to reset, reflect, and strategize. February is when you actually start making moves.
So here’s to smarter goals, more ease, and a practice that actually runs like a business. Let’s make February count!
