➡️ “I just need more clients,”
➡️ “Why isn’t my website converting?”
or
➡️ “Marketing stresses me out,”

It might be time to take a closer look at your online presence—and more importantly, who’s helping you build it.

We sat down with our trusted referral partner Monica Kovach, Founder of Hold Space Creative, to dig into the most common branding and website mistakes therapists make (and how to fix them), including why your online presence might be working against you, even if you don’t realize it.

Spoiler: If your site reads like a resumé and still has a “coming soon” services page, it’s time to call in the pros.

Q&A with Hold Space Creative

Q: What inspired you to start Hold Space Creative, and how has your mission evolved since then?

I started Hold Space Creative in 2017, after working as an art therapist and mental health counselor. Friends and family would always ask me, “How do I find a therapist? When I search online, I can never tell which ones are right for me.”

Even with my own background in mental health, I had the same issue—it was almost impossible to tell therapists apart online. Most sites looked and sounded the same. On the flip side, my therapist friends were struggling to fill their caseloads with the right clients, even though they had deep expertise.

So I decided to help bridge that gap by designing websites that didn’t just look good, but clearly communicated how a therapist holds space. That way, potential clients could find the right-fit support, faster.

Eight years and hundreds of websites later, I’ve watched therapists start treating their websites as tools for connection—not just online resumés. It’s slow, but the shift is happening.

Q: What are the most common challenges you see therapists face when it comes to branding or building a website?

  • Lack of clarity – No brand mission, values, or vision leads to resumé-style websites and vague messaging.

  • Overwhelm – It’s a lot to build a website from scratch. Ask for help.

  • Perfectionism – Don’t wait for it to be perfect. Done is better than perfect—especially online.

Q: For someone overwhelmed by the idea of marketing, where do you recommend they start?

Start with your website. It’s your 24/7 marketing employee—working for you even when you’re off the clock. Before you dive into social media or paid ads, make sure your website is built to convert. Everything else you do will eventually lead people back to it.

Q: What are the biggest mistakes you see private practice owners make with their online presence—and how can they fix them?

  • Treating their site like a resumé – Potential clients don’t care about your credentials first. They want to know if you can help them.

  • Prioritizing social over the site – You don’t own Instagram. You do own your website. Make it count.

  • Not owning their domain or site at all – Invest in your own domain and a platform you control. It’s your online home. (Note from Boss Co: “we’re looking at you Simple Practice Monarch sites”)

Q: What makes a therapy website stand out to potential clients (in a good way)?

  • Great design – Especially on mobile. Most clients are browsing on their phones.

  • Professional photos – Not just your headshot. Include your space, your approach, and client-centered imagery.

  • Strong copy + niche focus – Speak to specific people with specific problems. Generalist websites blend in. The ones that convert make people feel seen.

Q: How do your services help therapists spend more time doing the work they love—and less time feeling like a tech/messaging expert?

We’ve designed our Premium Squarespace Templates to work hard for you. They come with built-in strategy, conversion-friendly layouts, and clear calls to action. You don’t need to figure it all out yourself—you can get a professional website up in days, not months.

That means less time stressing, and more time seeing clients (or, you know, taking an actual lunch break).

Q: What’s one thing most therapists overlook when trying to attract their ideal clients online?

Clarity.

So many therapists want more clients, but haven’t identified who they actually want to work with. Out of fear of excluding anyone, they keep things vague—which just makes it harder for the right people to connect.

If you’re talking to everyone, you’re talking to no one. That’s especially true in mental health. When someone is searching for a therapist, they’re asking: “Do you understand me?”

Q: What should someone look for when choosing a design/branding partner for their therapy practice?

First, figure out how much support you want.

If you’re a DIY-er, our templates and copy kits are great starting points. You get strategic guidance and beautiful design—without building from scratch.

If you’d rather someone just do it for you, that’s okay too. Look for a designer who understands therapy and mental health. It’ll save you a lot of time. We offer full customization and tech support for folks in that “just help me already” phase.

At Boss Co, we care a lot about who we refer our clients to—and Hold Space Creative is one of the best in the business. Their team understands therapists, business growth, and the real pressure of running a private practice while trying to be visible online.

They’re not just designers. They’re translators—helping you turn your expertise into messaging that resonates and websites that work (...and their templates are GORGEOUS).

Whether you’re starting from scratch or staring at a stale site that hasn’t been updated since 2020, Hold Space Creative can help.

Because getting more clients shouldn’t mean burning out trying to explain what you do. Let your website do the talking for once.
